HIV/AIDS has become the major health problem in the country with more than 5.2 million people infected in the sub continent and more and more people infected each day. Besides being a health problem it is also considered to be a social problem, as it has entered into every fabric of our society. Hence only a concerted effort could bring down the infection to a very significant level. Though the NGOs in Tamil Nadu are working hard to reduce the infection, with support of government and other bilateral agencies, there lacks a coordination between these NGOs and between the donors themselves. If these NGOs work together in coordination with each other and if there is a broad based strengthening of partnership with the donor agencies the quality of intervention could surely improve. This would pave the way for achieving the objectives of each projects and reduction of HIV prevalence in the state in a short span of time.

To achieve this, a unit representing all the NGOs in Tamil Nadu is very vital. Realizing this, 11 NGOs heads got together in Chennai on 14th October 2003 and conceived the idea of a NGO Network for the state.

After series of meetings and deliberations the NGOs agreed to start the Network and named it as “Initiatives of HIV/AIDS Net (IHN)”
